About... Our Rings
This page is about the ring making process. If you're more interested in the metals we use to make rings, see About... Our Metals.
Our
rings begin as the finest quality half hard wire from the most
consistent and reputable mill. We don't shop around for better prices.
We chose the best source and buy only from that source so that rings we
make today perfectly match rings we made last year. For dense chain and
maille designs with close tolerances, this is an extremely important
consideration and the gauge measurements of different suppliers can
vary widely, so we don't take any chances.
The
rings won't be perfect unless the coils are perfect, so we feed our
wire into each and every coil by hand. That's actually a pretty good
way to lose a finger, so we're extremely careful and take every
practical precaution to ensure safety. The most important precaution is
simply that we make rings every day, so we're never, ever the least bit
out of practice.
Freshly
cut rings are minutely examined for burrs and even slightly burred
rings are scrapped. We then tumble polish the rings with stainless
steel shot for several hours to clean and polish them until they're so
shiny it's hard to look at them in bright light. Tumble polishing the
rings also hardens them and makes them even stronger. Once polished and
dry, they're examined under magnification and culled of even the
smallest imperfection before they're weighed and packaged in attractive
and convenient glass topped tins.
We price our rings fairly, even to the point of being priced competitively with lower quality mass produced rings available from many jewelry suppliers. Despite that, you can find cheaper rings.
